Uruguay is taking a huge leap forward in the world and doing what many western countries aren’t, they have provided every student with a laptop.

Uruguay has been a supporter of the OLPC (One Laptop Per Child) initiative since its start. The OLPC initiative builds small and cheap laptops that run Linux and sells them for $100 or less to governments or other entities.

Each laptop runs Linux and has Wi-Fi. The built in software provides location based social networking between OLPC’s and simple word processing as well as internet if you can find a connection.

Back in 2007, the first batch of Uruguay Students received a OLPC, and it looked like a success, now the Uruguay Government took the next step and provided a FREE laptop for every Student in its Primary School circuit. What’s even more amazing is that this entire project cost the Uruguay Government a mere 5% of its annual school budget. This is an extraordinary feat and we congratulate the Uruguay Government for taking this step.
