Hitachi demoed a very basic face recognition system at CEATEC this week. The system is a normal TV, with a built-in webcam that runs face recognition technology similar to the ones Sony uses in its cybershot camera’s. The technology is able to detect where you are looking, and turns off the TV screen, when you look away from the TV.

This technology could be extremely useful to many people that leave their TV’s on all day and/or forget to turn them off when they leave the room. This is an addition to the multitude of “Eco-TV” technologies being demoed at CEATEC, but this one is a cool party trick.
